The Old Red House Shop
Founded in 1988 by Gail Smith working from
home, Abigail Crafts supplied embroidered birth samplers and bibs. Local
shops and craft centres were interested in bibs and other gift items, and
began selling them. Later Gail sold through craft fairs and craft parties,
adding other craft workers goods to the range. Cross stitch kits were also
sold.
A move to Gloucestershire in 1994, and
the arrival of Baby no.3, prompted Gail to enroll on a City and Guilds
Embroidery and design course at Gloscat. Completed in 1998, Gail gained
her city and guilds part 1.
Shortly after this a small shop unit
became available in the village where Gail lived. and in October 1998,
The village shop was opened. Because of her links with other
craft teachers, a range of lessons and taster sessions were organised,
which have included decoupage, beginners patchwork, |

bead classes,
papermaking and creative embroidery. In the summer of 1999, a fully fitted classroom
was added at the rear of the shop, where regular
classes were held. Including, rag rug, patchwork, parchment craft, and
machine embroidery.
Local handmade crafts are also featured, salt dough, jewellery,
cards, painted pots to name a few.
During the school holidays, children's classes
were started, and are still very popular. We became the exclusive stockist of
Kits For Kids, a range of sewing and craft kits for children age 5
to 12years. It is now four years
since the shop opened, with clientele growing, in September 2002 we
expanded by moving to new premises in the nearby town of Stonehouse
stocking over 1100 bolts of fabric.
