Buying a sewing machine with quilting in mind.

Basics - what you need!

To achieve a ¼  inch seam a machine must have the capacity to either move the needle to the desired position so that the edge of the foot can be used as a guide or have a special foot with a ¼  inch already marked out.

All the machines in this guide have both features, their needles can be positioned anywhere between left and right as it is not sufficient to have three set positions. A ¼  inch foot is still useful as it is a straight stitch foot suitable for fine fabrics, this requires centre needle position. Some machines in this guide will be equipped with this foot as standard. To quilt successfully a walking foot is very useful, some of the machines in this guide have one supplied as standard.

All the machines featured will help their users to produce beautiful patchwork quilts, but remember the materials and methods used are just as important as the correct tools.

Some of these machines are very luxurious and have wonderful features,

but there is plenty of choice.
